The farmers, Abby Sadauckas & Jake Galle aim to improve soil health through organic management. This includes moving poultry each day to fertilize the fields, rotating cows, sheep and goats through pastures and providing safe, appropriate housing for animals at every stage of life. The farm produces a variety of livestock products including beef, chicken, goat, goose, lamb and turkey for sale year-round at farmers' markets in Brunswick, direct from the farm store and through an online store.
Apple Creek is participating in the Farmers' Market area. The farm's primary products sold through this year's virtual fair are sheepskins and cashmere goat hides.
The farm's sheep are a mix of wool breeds from the islands off Maine's coast and breeds including Bluefaced Leicester, Oxford, and Romney. Sheepskins are an essential home accessory in the Northeast and can be used as rugs, blankets or throws. Each sheepskin is unique. The color and fiber are impacted by breed, age of sheep and the tanning process. The sheepskins are tanned in the United States by one of three different tanneries. Each sheepskin includes information about the tannery used in the product listing.
The farm's herd of North American Cashmere goats spends summers browsing in the fields and forests. Each Spring the farmers harvest cashmere (the goat's fine undercoat) by combing it out as the weather warms. In the fall, the farmers harvest two-year old goats for their meat and hides which are full of soft cashmere fiber. Tanning the hides and offering them as a unique value-added offering is part of the farmers' commitment to honoring the whole animal. The hides are tanned in the United States by one of three different tanneries. Each unique hide includes information about the tannery used in the product listing.
